We’re taking a look at step two in the design process–
Step Two- Budget & Practical Needs: Step one (finding your inspiration) in the design process is dreamy and fun- step two, however, gets things back to reality. A very important step if you desire to create a real space instead of just a good design on paper that you can’t afford!
Ask yourself these questions to help determine your basic practical needs in the space:
- Who will be using the space? (such as children, guests, whole family, etc.) Does anyone have special needs that should be considered?
- How will you use this space? Will it have more than one function? (such as a family room where people can read, entertain friends and also watch movies?)
- List your current likes & dislikes about the area you will be renovating: What don’t you like about the space? What isn’t functioning correctly? Is there enough seating, enough lighting, etc.? Is there anything you do like about the room?
- Take inventory. Is there anything you currently own that you want to use in the space? (furniture, photos, artwork, accessories, plants?) What new furnishings will you need?
- What are your time restrictions for the project? Do you need the space done in time for a certain event or holiday?
- How much can you afford to spend on the total project? Knowing your budget is helpful for many reasons! Right now with the state of the economy, some people choose to complete their projects over an extended period of time instead of all at once. If you start out with a “ball-park” budget, you can then easily break costs down- for example, start with major things like architectural changes, fixtures, painting or new flooring, and then fill in the blanks later with furniture, lighting and accessories. Having a design plan complete before you start any construction work or purchase any furnishings is key- this initial investment can save you thousands! It pays to have a plan.
**side note: If you don’t have any idea of how much things are going to cost, then do a little research with contractors and other service providers in your area. Ask your friends who they’ve enjoyed working with, then make a few phone calls or check websites online and this will help you get the “ballpark” budget for your project.
