A question was recently asked about designing for a small space- mainly concerning color selection. I like to use the 60:30:10 principal when using color in a small space. Here’s how to do it:
(1) Select a main color to be used throughout the home. This is your “base” color- the color you will see the most of throughout. You’ll use this in 60% of the home- use it for the main wall color, major furniture pieces, dominant fabrics, or flooring.
(2) Select a “main accent color“. Use this throughout the home in smaller doses, for things such as accent walls, ceiling color, smaller furniture pieces, flooring, pillows or artwork. This color will be used in about 30% of the home.
(3) Select a “splash” accent color. You can use this for trims and moldings, doors, and smaller accessories- such as vases, picture frames and flowers. The “splash” color is often a color that “pops”- that stands out even though you use it in small areas. Red is a favorite “splash” accent color of mine. The splash color shows up in about 10% of the space.
Here’s an example from one of my design projects:
If you really want a shortcut way to have colors that flow in your home- first choose a favorite paint color, then use 2 other shades of that color from the same paint chip as your main accent and splash colors to create instant, fool proof color flow in your home, big or small. And by using a monochromatic (similar colors) paint scheme, you will be creating a feeling of calm throughout your home. Happy painting!
